What is a property assessor?

Property assessors are local officials who determine the value of a property for local real estate taxation purposes

The assessor determines the value of parcels within a city for property tax purposes

Valuations follows the standards established by the Minnesota Department of Revenue, State Board of Assessors and State Statutes

Assessors study construction, sales data and neighborhood trends to establish valuation standards in their work.

Assessors are licensed through the State of Minnesota
How is assessing different than an appraisal?

Single-property appraisal or “Fee Appraisal” is the valuation of a particular property as of a given date.

Assessment or “Mass Appraisal” is the systematic appraisal of groups of properties as of a given date using standardized procedures and statistical testing.
What is the Assessor responsible for?

Accurate and equitable appraise and classification of property

Assist and explain the appeal process if a property owner disagrees with their estimated market value or classification

Determine the current classification and use of properties

Provide information and feedback to taxing authorities
